A wonderfully timeworn 19th-century French cider pitcher, or flagon, originally made as a working vessel for carrying and serving cider and other beverages.

Constructed from individually fitted wooden staves secured by iron bands, vessels of this type were part of everyday life in the cider-producing regions of France. Cider was traditionally stored in larger barrels, with handled pitchers and flagons used to carry and serve it from barrel to table. Surviving examples are particularly associated with Normandy and are an enduring example of French rural folk craftsmanship.

This example retains a deeply aged wooden surface, broad iron bands and a dramatic hand-shaped iron handle. The pouring spout is fashioned from a copper-alloy metal, with subtle traces of green oxidation visible beneath its darkened surface. Irregular rivets, worn edges and variations throughout the wood and metal reflect its original utilitarian construction and generations of use.

Its original utilitarian purpose is still immediately apparent—one of those pieces whose wear tells as much of its story as its form. Now retired from service, it makes a striking sculptural vessel for a kitchen, dining room or collected display.
